From Teacher to Mom to Designer: Embracing the Unconventional Path to My Dreams

Introduction: Have you ever had a dream that lingered in the depths of your soul, but somehow, God took your life on a different journey? That's precisely how my story unfolded. Growing up, I had always been fascinated by the field of design. I would daydream about what my life would be like if I could become a designer, but the conventional perception of creativity seemed to cloud my belief in myself. I couldn't draw, play an instrument, sing, or even make crafts. However, what I failed to realize was that creativity knows no bounds and can manifest in the most unexpected ways. Join me on this journey as I recount my path from teacher to mom to finally embracing my dream as a designer. I hope it inspires you to try something that you never thought you could do.

Chapter 1: The Conventional Ideas of Creativity

As a young dreamer, I found myself entranced by the world of design. The vibrant colors, innovative structures, fascinating people, and captivating designs ignited a spark within me. Yet, the chains of conventionality held me back. I believed that creativity was reserved for those who could sketch masterpieces, play mesmerizing melodies, or weave intricate crafts….maybe even looked a certain way. Little did I know that creativity's true essence resides not in the medium, but in the way it's harnessed to shape the world around us.

Chapter 2: Choosing the Teaching Path

Despite my undying passion for design, life nudged me toward a different calling—teaching. While it may have seemed like an unexpected detour, I soon realized that teaching offered its own unique outlet for me. I loved organizing, getting the classroom prepared, meeting the students, planning out the lessons for the year, and evaluating the final results. These were traits that I would use in my future endeavors, I just didn’t know it yet. For me, teaching was a safe decision, not a risky move, but I loved it more than I thought I could. I went on maternity leave and figured I’d be back to teach after a few years.

What I imagined my stereotypical classroom would look like.

Chapter 3: Unleashing the Creativity of Motherhood

I was happily settled into my role as a teacher, but life gifted me with another twist—motherhood…times four! Becoming a mom was an adventure unlike any other, and it brought with it an entirely new perspective on creativity. From crafting imaginative stories to transforming ordinary objects into magical playthings, I tapped into an untapped wellspring of ingenuity. In the midst of diapers, bedtime stories, and endless cuddles, I found my inner voice whispering, "You are creative, just in your own unique way." Being a stay at home mom was more than I could’ve imagined and I’m so grateful for the time and the ability to do that, but I knew I wanted something else. Hands down stay at home moms have the hardest job and I felt like I would serve my family and myself better if I worked outside of the home part time. That’s when I asked myself what I wanted to do. I could do anything at that point, go to school again, work someplace part time, but I felt the calling to try something risky. I mean, why not?

Photographer is also a hard job. This was the best of about 20 takes!

Chapter 4: Embracing the Designer Within

I had always loved remodeling, making changes that were unexpected, but functional and beautiful. I would get asked how I could “see” what it would look like and how did I know it would work? I just did. My brain worked that way and I didn’t know how to explain it. The dream of becoming a designer that had lingered since my youth called out to me, urging me to take the leap. It was time to shatter the idea of doing what’s “safe” and “responsible” and embrace the unconventional path to my dreams. If I didn’t take hold of who I wanted to be and what I wanted my life to be like, who would? And it wasn’t easy. I had four kids, a husband that worked quite a lot, and a lot of responsibilities to take care of. It really wasn’t the optimal time to try something new.

Chapter 5: Designing My Destiny

With trepidation and excitement intermingled, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and professional growth. I reached out to people in the industry, I honed my skills, attended workshops, and devoured every bit of knowledge I could find. What I lacked in conventional artistic abilities and conventional education, I compensated for with an innovative mindset, attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. I discovered that design was not limited to a specific skill set but a mindset that could be cultivated and nurtured. There is a lot to be said for natural abilities and believing in yourself. This in no way takes away from how nervous I was to meet with clients. How the feeling of imposter syndrome is a very real feeling. But aren’t we all at some point? We are all learning and honing skills at different levels throughout our life. I went on to develop my process and pricing to work at the various project levels as I grew. I’ve helped hundreds of clients create a home they’ve always wished for at a scope and budget that they wanted. From remodels, new builds, furnishings, finishes, color consults, space planning, and a multitude of other aspects regarding home interiors, I’ve done it all. Every project is different, every project has it’s own qualities, I love taking my clients through the process. Getting to know them, their families, what their goals are, and how I can help is such a special gift and I’m glad they let me be a part of it.

Conclusion: Looking back on my winding journey, I realize that life has a way of unfolding in mysterious and unpredictable ways. While I wish I had known and believed in my creative abilities earlier, I now understand that our choices shape the path we are meant to be on. My path through teaching and motherhood provided invaluable experiences, allowing me to grow as an individual and infuse my design work with a unique perspective. So, my fellow dreamers, don't let the constraints of conventionality or the limitations you perceive in yourself hinder your pursuit of your dreams. Embrace the unconventional, for it is often in the uncharted territories that we discover our true potential.

It's the ability to think differently, to see possibilities where others see limitations, and to bring something new and captivating into the world.
