3 Rules of Scale for Selecting the Right Table Lamp Size

Are you looking to solve a lighting dilemma but want to know how to avoid a design dilemma in the process? Here is your guide of everything you need to know about selecting a table lamp size that is scaled proportionately to your space.

There no such thing as a one-size fits all approach when finding the right table lamp height. To understand which table lamp height is good for you and your space, several factors must be considered. Location, function, weight, and height all come into play, and we’re going to address each one.

How Tall Should a Table Lamp Be? 3 Rules of Scale for Choosing the Right Table Lamp Size

WHAT SIZE SHOULD A SIDE TABLE OR NIGHTSTAND LAMP BE?

Generally, the bottom of your table lamp shade should be about eye-level when you’re seated near it, which is usually around 58” to 62” from the floor, depending who is sitting next to it of course. Table lamps should be no more than half the height of the surface they are sitting on, and the lamp shade should be smaller than the width of the surface. The ideal height for table lamps tends to be around 30” from the base to the top of of the lamp shade. So, if your table is about 30” tall, this will be right in that 60” sweet spot.

Before going shopping for a table lamp, we recommend taking measurements of the furniture it will be sitting on. If the lamp is for a side table or nightstand, measurements should be taken of the seat or bed height as well. If you don’t have furniture yet then don’t jump the gun and buy a table lamp yet! Appropriate lamp scale is entirely dependent on the furniture around it, and it is way easier to coordinate a lamp with furniture than to buy furniture according to the lamp you chose.

WHAT ARE CONSOLE TABLE LAMPS?

Console table lamps are different from side table lamps in that the tend to be taller and skinnier, so as not to consume too much space on an entry or dining room. This style of lamp is commonly used on buffets, consoles, sofa tables, and dressers. and are more often used as an accent piece with ambient lighting than for functionality.

HOW DO YOU SIZE A CONSOLE TABLE LAMP?

How to Choose the Right Lamp for a Console Table

The size of your console table lamp is largely dependent on the size of your console or buffet table. and the artwork and decor surrounding it.

For example, if you have art piece hanging above the console, you don’t want the lamp to overwhelm the area. Therefore, we recommend that your lamp height doesn’t exceed 2/3 the height of your art when it is hanging on the wall.

Another factor to consider is whether you want to have two console lamps on mirroring on opposing sides, or just one lamp. If you opt for one, just be sure that the other decor on the table balances the height and weight of the lamp.

WHAT IS A GOOD SIZE FOR DESK LAMPS?

As opposed to table and console lamps which serve as mood lighting, desk lamps are used for functionality and provide direct lighting for the task at hand. Despite the name, desk lamps are commonly used in areas outside the home office, such as a craft room, the living room, or bedroom depending on where you like to get work done.

When deciding on a desk lamp, you should consider its adjustability and reach. For example, if you are working on a large desk, look for a desk lamp with a long reach, such as one with a swing arm design.

The height should be tall enough to reach above your head and out of your eyes, and have enough freedom to adjust it so it doesn’t cast a shadow on your work. .
